ARRIVAL IN BERLIN

Arrive independently in Berlin and transfer to the hotel. After time to settle in and recover from the flight, join Rabbi Ron Li-Paz and fellow travelers for a welcome reception and introductory presentation about the remarkable Jewish history, culture, and communities that will accompany us throughout this journey. In the evening, enjoy our included Welcome Dinner, an opportunity to get acquainted with the group.

BERLIN: THE CAPITAL OF EMPIRE, CULTURE & MEMORY

To allow a gentler start to the journey, today focuses on Berlin’s major historical landmarks and cultural foundations. We explore the Brandenburg Gate, Unter den Linden, Bebelplatz, Gendarmenmarkt, and the government district, while discussing the evolution of Berlin from the Prussian capital to one of Europe’s most influential modern cities.

The afternoon allows time for rest or a visit to Museum Island and consider Germany’s cultural achievements alongside the complex history of the twentieth century.

Dinner is not included.

JEWISH BERLIN & SACHSENHAUSEN

Today focuses on the story of Jewish Berlin and the devastating rupture created by the Nazi era. We begin at the New Synagogue and Centrum Judaicum before walking through the historic Jewish quarter around Oranienburger Straße, where Jewish cultural, intellectual, and religious life flourished for generations.

We continue to the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, where Rabbi Li-Paz will lead a memorial prayer service honoring the victims.

We then travel to Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum, where we learn about the mechanisms of Nazi persecution and the experiences of Jewish prisoners and political detainees. Returning to Berlin.

Dinner is included.

BERLIN TO DRESDEN

Approximate distance: 200 km / 125 miles

Depart Berlin and travel south into Saxony. Dresden offers a striking contrast between destruction and restoration. During our walking tour we explore the Frauenkirche, Neumarkt, Fürstenzug, Semper Opera district, Zwinger complex, and the city’s magnificent Baroque architecture.

Jewish heritage is woven into the story of Dresden through the site of the former Semper Synagogue, discussions of pre-war Jewish life, and a visit to the New Synagogue, symbolizing the continued presence and renewal of Jewish life in Germany.

The evening is free for relaxation and exploration of Dresden’s beautifully restored historic center.

Dinner is included.

DRESDEN – BAYREUTH – NUREMBERG

Approximate distance: 340 km / 211 miles

Leaving Dresden, we travel through Bavaria with a stop in Bayreuth, known for its cultural heritage and ties to German intellectual history. Continuing to Nuremberg, we discover a city that reflects both the achievements and darkest chapters of German history.

The medieval old town provides the backdrop for discussions about Jewish life dating back centuries, while the city also serves as the setting for understanding the rise of National Socialism and the postwar Nuremberg Trials.

Dinner is included.

NUREMBERG & SALZBURG

Approximate distance: 300 km / 186 miles

This morning we visit the Memorium Nuremberg Trials and Courtroom 600, where the principles of modern international justice were established.

Following Rabbi Li-Paz’s recommendation, the program should conclude early enough to allow preparation for Shabbat. Upon arrival in Salzburg, the group gathers for Kabbalat Shabbat and a festive dinner, either with the local Jewish community when possible or in a private dedicated setting.

Included Shabbat dinner.

SALZBURG

Those interested may join Rabbi Li-Paz for an optional Shabbat morning Torah study before breakfast. The remainder of the day is devoted to the beauty and cultural heritage of Salzburg, birthplace of Mozart and one of Europe’s most impressive Baroque cities.

We stroll through the historic center, visit Mozart’s Birthplace, Salzburg Cathedral, St. Peter’s Abbey and Cemetery, and ascend to Hohensalzburg Fortress for panoramic views over the city and Alpine landscape.

Dinner is included.

SALZBURG – AUSTRIAN LAKES – VIENNA

Approximate distance: 300 km / 186 miles

Travel through the spectacular Salzkammergut Lake District, with scenic stops along Wolfgangsee and surrounding Alpine landscapes. Continuing eastward, we arrive in Vienna, capital of the Habsburg Empire.

For interested participants, an optional performance of Verdi’s La Traviata at the Vienna State Opera may be offered.

Dinner is not included.

VIENNA: IMPERIAL CAPITAL & JEWISH VIENNA

We begin with an orientation drive introducing the Ringstrasse, Parliament, Rathaus, and Hofburg.

Vienna illustrates both the heights of European civilization and the extraordinary contributions of Jewish intellectual, artistic, and communal life. We explore the city’s imperial heritage before turning to the story of Vienna’s Jewish community at the Jewish Museum, Judenplatz, and the Stadttempel Synagogue.

The day includes discussion of figures such as Theodor Herzl, Sigmund Freud, and the many Jewish thinkers who helped shape modern Europe.

An authentic Viennese coffeehouse experience is included.

Where feasible, arrangements may be made for a discussion with a local Jewish leader, educator, or community representative.

Dinner is included.

VIENNA & BRATISLAVA

A short drive along the Danube brings us to Bratislava, whose Jewish community played an important role in Central European Jewish scholarship and religious life.

Visits include the Heydukova Street Synagogue, Jewish Community Museum, Holocaust Memorial, and the Chatam Sofer Memorial. Alongside these sites, we explore the charming Old Town, castle viewpoints, and historic squares that reveal the city’s multicultural character.

The evening includes time to enjoy Slovak cuisine and local hospitality.

Dinner is included.

BRATISLAVA TO BUDAPEST

Approximate distance: 200 km / 125 miles

Following the Danube southward, we arrive in Budapest, one of Europe’s most magnificent capitals. An introductory tour explores both Buda and Pest, including Matthias Church, Fisherman’s Bastion, Heroes’ Square, Andrássy Avenue, and the Parliament area.

Budapest’s dramatic architecture provides the setting for understanding the city’s Jewish legacy and its central role in Central European history.

The final full day focuses on Budapest’s extraordinary Jewish heritage. We visit the Dohány Street Synagogue complex, Hungarian Jewish Museum, Jewish Quarter, Rumbach Synagogue, Kazinczy Orthodox Synagogue, and the Shoes on the Danube Memorial.
