Jewish Life and Culture in Poland, Past and Present

Jewish Life and Culture in Poland, Past and Present

Organized by the Hebrew Union College Jewish Language Project, operated by Jerulita Travel.

The first in a series of cultural study tours highlighting the Jewish past and present, led by Professor Sarah Bunin Benor, Founding Director of the HUC Jewish Language Project. Learn from scholars and community activists working to preserve, reclaim, and reimagine their ancestral culture. Analyze language. Visit museums and historical sites. Enjoy concerts and local cuisine.

A study tour built around an international conference: “Jewish Languages and Politics. Ideological Choices of Jews in the Modern Era”

Learning Objectives

Participants will:

  • Understand how Jewish languages in Poland (especially Yiddish, Hebrew, and Jewish Polish) reflect ideological, religious, and political choices in modern Jewish history.
  •  Examine how language functions as a marker of identity, belonging, assimilation, resistance, and revival.
  • Analyze historical and contemporary sites as linguistic landscape.
  • Explore how post-Holocaust Jewish communities reconstruct heritage through education, ritual, tourism, and cultural production.
  • Engage directly with scholars, activists, clergy, and community members working on contemporary Jewish cultural renewal.
  • Connect historical and contemporary Jewish communities in Poland to global Jewish diasporas and current conversations about heritage, authenticity, and memory.
